dangers of retractable leashesRetractable leashes are dangerous.  Many people use retractable leashes as a convenient way to allow their dog some freedom while on a walk.  Others value retractable leashes because they feel it addresses a behavior issue that many dogs exhibit, which is pulling on the leash. While retractable leashes may seem like a great idea, there are actually serious dangerous issues associated with the use of them for any reason.

Retractable leashes take away control.

Retractable leashes allow too much lead room, thereby putting your dog in a dangerous situation. Most dog lovers, at one point or another, have experienced an encounter with a roaming dog.  It can cause quite a scare! An unleashed, aggressive dog can quickly pounce upon your own beloved pooch causing injury or even death.  Similarly, your dog may happen upon a leashed or unleashed dog and feel threatened or just not like the other dog and decided to take a stance.  In either situation, the quick control a short lead provides could mean the difference between retreating to safety or a horrible disaster.

Retractable leashes can injure the dog walker.

Injuries relating to the use of retractable leashes are on the rise.  A simple walk could result in serious injury.  The elderly, who are already susceptible to fractures and falls, are experiencing more and more injuries related to the use of “pet products”.  This number will continue to rise if we don’t spread the word of the dangerous associated with retractable leash. Furthermore, in a report citing Consumer reports it was noted that tens of thousands of injuries were caused by pet leashes alone.  Retractable leashes can cause “burns, deep cuts, strangulations and even amputations” and more according to the Animal Hospital of North Asheville. Flexi notes these precautions of using their retractable leashes right on their website. Is it worth the risk?

Say no to the danger of retractable leashes.

Why take the risk of potential injury to you or your dog due a retractable leash? There are many other options on the market.  Use a no pull harness instead.  Put yourself in the driver’s seat! Dogs pull for a variety of reasons. However, if retractable leash looks attractive due to your dog pulling, resist. It is wiser to invest your time in training your dog than taking the easy way out. If you’ve tried to no avail to train your dog there are many reasonable trainers out there to come work with you and your dog.  Not only will training result in a more enjoyable walk, but consider it a bonding experience.

Additionally, as your trusted pet sitter we can give you great advice and even come in, walk your dog and work with him while you are at work.  Sometimes poor behavior on the leash is relative to the amount of pent up energy your dog has!
